OOI 2021 interview: Soulbound

I was impressed with the transition from scrolling screen to single screen when obtaining jewels. Were there any references for the transition when you made the game?

I discovered this mechanic in 2016 when I was toying around with pico8. You can check this gif : https://twitter.com/benjamin_soule_/status/746467667482140672.

At that time, I knew it has potential but I also recognize it would need solid leveldesign skills to make interesting levels. And leveldesign is not my strong point, I tends to focus more on procedural levels.

So I kept that project in mind, waiting for the right time to make it shine again.

When I saw the Ludum Dare 47 theme "Stuck in a loop" I decided to try again. I used the gem to limit the hero power ( in the previous version you can use it whenever you want ) and it made the leveldesign easier for me.

I wanted some kind of lamulana vibe for this game, but I'm not that good with story telling, I tried my best to fit a little story in the game during the 48h

I think it was quite successful to use the screen transition(single to scrolling) in the game, because it effectively presents the situation of the main character whose soul is literally bound to jewels in a non-verbal way. The title <Soulbound> is surely a very appropriate name in this sense. On the other hand, the screen transition seems to put the jewels (instead of the main human character) in the subject position, which could be interpreted as a non-human subject which got popular in various discourses recently. What is your opinion about this?

Yes I see what you mean, infact I wanted to make the gem as a curse that "focus" the attention on him. Unexpected focus change are always fun. I have wonderful memories of this old Cactus game: ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fw2WVGDTR5c&ab_channel=aWalkThroughLife ) The character change was very fast and unexpected, at that time ( around 2010 ) it was very innovative.

It was my first time to see the platform pico-8. Would you explain why you chose to use pico-8 for your game?

Pico8 is an awesome tool for making videogames. It a has many constraints ( color, resolution, cart size ) forcing you to focus on what really matter in your game.

Also I spent a lot of time in the game industry, in my ealry years I could work 1 or 2 years on the same project it was exhausting and disheartening.

Pico8 really helped me out to gather strength and realize I was not too old for gamedev... yet :D

Pico8 is also a fantastic tools for newcomers. I already used it to teach gamedev to teenagers.

If the screen transition from single to scrolling in the game is used under somewhat different settings (other than 8 bit dot graphic), what would the play experience be like? For instance, what would it be like if the game is presented with FHD graphics? I think the play experience would be quite different even when the mechanic is exactly the same. What do you think?

Well I think that resolution can be anything as long it's fixed on project startup. Because, with this mechanic, screen size totally affect how you make levels.

If I have to work again on a bigger version of soulbound - for a punkcake projet for example ( https://punkcake.itch.io/ ) I will insert a screensize rectangle inside the leveleditor to design the temple faster. I remember I spent a lot of time tweeking tiles position during the LD jam because I had no way to make a tool like this in the pico8 editor.
