Infinite Children

Peter Brinson and Kelsey Rice

To explain about Infinite Children, we might say situation outside of the game is more important rather then inside of the game. This SF audiobook game is expanding/regressing its storyline according to the number of Steam achievements which earned by all players.

Please introduce your team. About team history, yourself, members and etc.

Peter Brinson started Infinite Children 4 years ago, prototyping various aesthetics and how voice over could communicate story. In 2015, Greg Chandler began writing the character, Theo’s, passages and John Prosky performed them. Soon after Suzanne Brinson played Mia’s part. In 2017, Kelsey Rice became the art director and in 2018 Mark Garbett composed and performed the score.

We wonder your first goal of this project. At the very first time in development, what was the key idea?

The initial goals was to make a game about the fear of the world becoming worse for the next generation.  And for many years prior, Peter experimented with projects that became longer and more detailed with group online participation.  When the game was far along, he incorporated this “extension dynamic” not Infinite Children.

Do you think your experiment is successful? And tell us the reason why do you think that.

Talking to people after they play it has proven that this resonates with players.  Peter has been experimenting with the extension dynamic in various forms for years, taking notes and pondering discussions.  But when he attached it to earning (Steam) achievements, he noticed that people quickly and confidently responded, with “Ah, that’s interesting”.

When ‘Infinite Children’ first launched, in-game contents became longer when players got steam achievement. But now in this regression phase, the whole content is getting shorter when players got steam achievement. In usual, most developers updates their game for release more contents. Why do you choose the opposite way?

In May 2019, the game was released.  It was about 7 minutes long, and became longer with each Steam achievement earned.  In June, 20,000 had been earned, fully extended it to about one hour. After a month of the game existing in its full form, The Regression began.  Once again, the game needed 20,000 achievements to change, but this time, to contract to a 7 minute version.

In early October, The Regression ended after these additional 20,000 achievements were earned.  (At this point 40,000 had been earned).

It is in it final stage now, extending based on the original 20,000 achievements.  When it is done, the game will no longer change.

As we felt, in current regression phase 'infinite children' looks like extreme limited edition. Because whenever people get more steam achievements, the game cuts its gameplay volume in itself. On the other hand while the growing phase, getting more contents (by people getting more steam achievements) looks similar with the evolution of humankind civilization, something like going forward together by combining each person's effort. What’s the meaning of ‘regression phase’ and ‘growing phase’ for you as a developer of this game?

Infinite Children’s plot may be about the promise of life extension, but its theme is about the anxiety of loss.  Early on, when it is short and frenetic, the player has little chance comprehend the story. Even the most perceptive player will fail to take in anything more than glimpses of visual themes and snippets of voice over.  But as the community engages, everyone gains. Each time an individual extends the game, details bore out, and the story gradually emerges for all players. With this progress, we can ponder how this extending format also embodies the topic - life extension.
