1. 간단한 자기 소개를 부탁드립니다. 이 작품을 함께 만든 분들이 있다면 그분들 소개도 해주세요.

저희는 독일 쾰른에서 주로 활동하는 게임 개발자들이 모인 팀입니다. 여러 나라에서 모인 다국적 팀이죠. 팀 인원 대부분이 쾰른 게임 랩에서 공부하고 있고요. 종종 몇가지 작은 프로젝트를 함께 만들다가, 2016년 루둠 다레(Ludum Dare)에 참여한 적이 있는데요. 거기서 ‘Vectronom’의 첫 프로토타입을 만들었어요. 원래 진지하게 접근한 프로젝트는 아니었어요. SpielFabrique 엑셀러레이터 프로그램을 받기 전까지는요. 엑설러레이터 프로그램을 진행하게 된 후에는 삶이 완전히 뒤바뀌어서, 처음엔 파트 타임으로 일하면서 만들던 프로젝트가 풀 타임 프로젝트가 되었습니다. 몇년 동안의 시간이 흐르면서 좀 더 많은 사람들이 팀에 합류하게 됐고, 설치형 게임같은 걸 포함한 다른 요소들도 만들게 됐고요. 저희는 계속 실험하면서, 디지털 게임 뿐만 아니라 인터랙티브 설치 작품 같은 것들을 만들 계획도 가지고 있습니다.

Please introduce your team. About team history, yourself, members and etc.

We are an international team of game developers based in Cologne, Germany with members from all over the world. Most of us studied together in the Cologne Game Lab. We worked together on some smaller projects, then in 2016 we participated in Ludum Dare 35 where we created the first prototype of Vectronom. It wasn’t meant to be a serious project until to our surprise we were accepted in the accelerator program SpielFabrique. This turned our life upside down, we started to work part-time then later full time on our projects. During the years more people joined us and we worked on some other things including hardware installations. Our plan is to keep experimenting and to create not only digital games but interactive installations as well.

2. 이 프로젝트의 처음이 궁금합니다. 이 작품의 아이디어를 어디서 얻었나요? 

‘Vectronom’을 처음 만들었던 게임 잼 주제가 'Shapeshift’였어요. 우리는 플레이어가 아니라, 스테이지 레벨 자체의 형상이 변하는 걸 핵심 아이디어로 삼았어요. 제작 전에 좀 걱정했던 부분은 우리가 동등하게 일할 수 없을 것 같다는 거였어요. 팀 구성 자체가 꽤 많이 일반적이지 않았거든요. 프로그래머 하나, 뮤지션 하나, 그리고 게임 디자이너 두 명. 그 때 게임 퀄리티는 정식 공개 버전하고는 비교도 안 될 만큼 부족한 완성도를 갖고 있었는데요. 코어 시스템은 확실히 담겨 있어요. 간단한 조작, 비트에 맞춰서 바뀌는 게임 환경, 그리고 계속해서 바뀌는 배경색 같은 것들요.

We wonder your first goal of this project. At the very first time in development, what was the key idea?

The topic of the game jam where Vectronom was born was “Shapeshift”. Our core idea was to create a game where not the player but the level itself changes its shape. Our primary concern was to create a concept where all of us can equally work; as our team had a quite unusual set up: One programmer, one musician, and two game designers. While this version of the game in uncomparable to the released version in terms of quality, all the core things were there: simple controls, game-world changing to the beat, color-changing background.

3. 이 실험의 성공 여부를 스스로 평가해주실래요?. 그리고 그렇게 생각하시는 이유도 알려주세요.

성공했다고 생각해요. ‘Vectronom’의 포인트는 분석이나 생각을 잃는 거예요. 분석하고 생각해서 스테이지를 깨려고 한다면 아마 어려울 테지만, 음악과 레벨 디자인의 변화를 느끼면서 게임을 플레이하면 쉽게 클리어할 수 있죠. 실제로 사람들이 그렇게 플레이하는 모습을 보면 우리 실험이 성공했다고 느껴요. 하지만 늘 우리 예상대로 되지는 않죠. 약 1년 간 프로덕션을 진행한 후에 큰 변화가 있었어요. 비트에 따라 레벨이 바뀌는데 사실 레벨과 음악이 좀 따로노는 느낌이었어요. 그래서 이 둘의 싱크가 잘 맞지 않으면 플레이어들이 게임을 풀어가는 방식을 쉽게 인지하기 어려웠죠. 아직도 기억하는 순간인데, 그 순간 스테이지 레벨과 음악을 함께 만드는 방법을 시도했죠. 느낌이 확 왔어요. 완성된 스테이지를 보고 “이 순간을 위해 게임을 이렇게도 오래 만들었구나”고 생각했죠. 그리고 모든 걸 뒤엎고 새로운 기조 아래서 프로젝트를 다시 시작했어요.

Do you think your experiment is successful? And tell us the reason why do you think that.

Yes. The point of the game is to get lost in it. You shouldn’t succeed by thinking, but by feeling the music and the level. Looking at people play makes me think we succeeded. But it wasn’t always like this. The biggest breakthrough we had was after more than a year of production. While the levels always changed to the beat, the music and levels were not created for each other. They weren’t in sync at all, so the player couldn’t get immersed that easily. I still remember the moment when we tried for the first time to make the level and music together. It immediately clicked and we saw that “japp, that’s what the game was about all along”. We scrapped everything we did before and restarted with the new philosophy.

4. Vetronom의 레벨들을 만들 때, 음악과 레벨 중 어느 것을 먼저 만드나요? 모든 레벨을 레벨 디자이너와 뮤지션이 함께 만든다고 들었는데, 그 과정을 좀 더 자세히 설명해주세요.

가장 많이 받은 질문이예요! 이건 꽤 복잡한 과정인데, 우리도 찾아내는 데 꽤 시간이 걸렸어요. 우리도 스테이지 레벨을 디자인하는 것부터 시작하기는 해요. 그런데 레벨 디자이너가 음악의 비트를 고려하면서 스테이지까지 디자인하기는 힘들죠. 그래서 처음엔 레벨 디자이너가 그 레벨의 첫번째 버전을 만들어서 뮤지션에게 넘깁니다. 그 스테이지가 어떤 방식으로 변화하는지 설명하는 내용도 같이 전해주죠. 애초에 비트가 중요한 단서가 되는 게임이기도 하고, 비트에 따라서 어떤 특정한 변화가 생겨야 하니까요. 그리고 나면 그에 맞춰 음악을 만들고, 다시 음악을 넘겨 받은 후에 레벨을 수정해서 다시 뮤지션에게 넘기고, 계속 이런 과정을 네 번 정도 반복하면서 계속 바꿔요. 스테이지 레벨 디자인과 음악이 잘 어우러질 때까지 말이죠.

When you design the stage of Vectronom, what is making first? Music or Stage level? You said musician with level designer made every levels, Please explain develop process more specific.​every

This is the question we get asked the most. It’s a complicated process, which took some time for us to figure out. We start with the levels, but us, the level designers had to learn to think a bit musically, to know what works and what doesn’t. When the first version of a level is done we give it to the musician with a piece of paper that explains what’s happening on the level. Which beats should be dominant, on what beat something specific happens etc. After that, it’s an iterative process where we go back and forth changing the level and the music until it works well together.

5. 멀티 플레이어 모드가 아주 인상적이었어요. 여러 사람이 함께 동시에 리듬 게임을 하는데, 다른 플레이어의 게임 오버 후 재시작이 다른 플레이어에게 영향을 주지 않는 모습이라던가. 그냥 보기엔 여러 사람이 경쟁적으로 레이싱을 벌이는 것 같은데, 그와 동시에 현재 레벨을 함께 클리어하는 협동 게임 같기도 하고요. 이런 방식의 멀티 플레이 모드를 만들때 가장 중요하게 생각한 점이 있다면 무엇이었나요?

원래는 게임을 시연 용도로 멀티플레이 모드를 넣은 거예요. 그래서 멀티 플레이어 모드라고 딱히 새로운 시스템 같은 걸 추가하지 않았어요. 둘 중 하나가 먼저 체크포인트에 도달하면 자동으로 다른 플레이어를 끌어당기는데. 딱히 심각하게 고려해서 만든 시스템은 아니었어요. 근데 솔직히 사람들이 굉장히 재미있어해서 좀 놀랐고, 서서히 ‘Vectronom’의 재미를 지탱하는 중요한 요소가 되더라고요. 이런 작은 성공을 확인하고서 멀티플레이 모드를 강조할 수 있는 추가 디자인이나 콘텐츠를 넣어보려고도 했었어요. 협동 플레이나 경쟁 모드를 생각해보기도 했는데 그건 썩 좋은 방향은 아닌 것 같더라고요. 시간이 좀 지나고 ‘Vectronom’의 멀티플레이 모드가 가지는 매력을 정확하게 깨닫게 됐죠. 저희는 사람들에게 이게 협동 모드라거나 경쟁 모드라는 얘기 같은 걸 하지 않아요. 사람들은 본능적으로 둘 중 하나로 게임을 즐기더라고요. 사람마다 다른 방식의 플레이를 즐기는 걸 보면 정말 흥미진진해요. 정말 아름다운 풍경이죠. 어떤 사람들은 체크포인트를 향해 다른 사람보다 빨리 가려고 노력하는데, 또 어떤 사람들은 뒤쳐진 플레이어를 기다려요. 주변에서 춤을 추거나, 진행이 막힌 사람들에게 해결 방식을 보여주기도 하고요. 혹은 스스로 죽고 재시작 하면서 다른 플레이어에게 이 레벨을 어떻게 클리어 해야 하는지 보여주기도 해요. 특히 서로 알지 못하는 사람들이 페스티벌에서 ‘Vectronom’ 멀티플레이를 함께 하고 있는 게 굉장히 보기 좋아요. 둘 중 누군가는 게임을 좀 더 경험해봤을 테고, 함께 춤을 출 수 있는 방법(‘Vectronom’ 스테이지 클리어 시 큐브 형태의 플레이어 캐릭터는 춤을 춘다)을 알아내겠죠! 심지어 어떤 사람들은 멀티 플레이어 모드를 켜고 솔로 플레이를 해요. 캐릭터 하나로 체크포인트에 도달해서 다른 캐릭터들을 끌어당기면서 플레이 스피드런을 즐기는데, 그걸 보는 건 개발자로서 정말 감동적인 순간이었습니다.

Multi Play mode was so impressive. It feels like playing rhythm game with various people. For example, when 2rd player make mistakes during play stage but it not bothering to whole game. And it looks like a multiplayer racing game, but at the same time it's a kind of co-op game to clear a level together. What was the most important point when developing Vectronom's multi play mode?​

Originally we added the multiplayer mode just to help to showcase the game. That’s why there are no additional systems added. It’s just that the first player reaching a checkpoint drags the other player(s). We didn’t think much of it. We were very surprised how much fun people had with it, and it slowly became one of the important pillars of the game. Seeing the success we wanted to add additional design/content to put emphasis on this mode. We went back and forth between coop and competitive but nothing felt right. Later we understood that the beauty of the game mode is exactly that. We don’t tell anyone what to do, if it’s coop or versus. People instinctively play one way or the other. It’s beautiful to see different gameplay situations to emerge. While some people race, some wait for each other before the checkpoint. Dancing around it, teasing the player who is stuck, or killing themselves and restarting the puzzle to show the other player how it’s done. It’s especially nice to see strangers play together at a festival. One might have more experience than the other, but they will figure out how to dance together. People even play with multiplayer mode enabled to play alone in a speedrun. They use one character to reach the exit as fast as possible while collecting pickups with the other. For us, It’s mindblowing to watch.
